Mary Elizabeth Dickey Smith

Mary Elizabeth Dickey Smith, born in Sylvania, Georgia on July 2, 1933, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2024, at the age of 90 in Canton, Georgia with her family by her side. She was the daughter of John and Hilda Dickey. Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother who touched the lives of many with her kind, loving and unselfish generosity.

Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert (Bob) E. Smith, and her daughter, Sheila Elaine Smith Holley. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Dianne Jenkins (Ron) of Canton, Georgia; granddaughters, Shelley Ellis Barrett (Jon) of Canton, Georgia and Jessica Smith Bookhoop (Josh) of Savannah, Georgia; grandsons, Austin Holley and Dalton Holley of Omaha, Nebraska; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Mary graduated from Commercial High School in Savannah in 1952. Mary's marriage to Bob took place on April 13, 1952, in Savannah, Georgia. She stood by his side as the wife of a service member stationed as a Sergeant at Hunter Army Air Force Base. Mary and Bob started their family in 1953 and together watched it grow with love for 62 years.

Mary had a fulfilling career at Walmart on Whitemarsh Island, where she worked as a cashier for over 20 years before retiring. She was known for her feisty and kind nature, always giving to those around her. Mary had a passion for the Atlanta Braves and enjoyed playing cards and board games. She cherished time spent at the casino with family and friends, and engaging in lively debates on all topics, big and small. Mary loved watching "The Young and the Restless" and "The Bold and the Beautiful," and her favorite moments were shared over meals with family and long phone conversations.

The funeral service to honor Mary's life will be held at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors on Hodgson Memorial Drive in Savannah, Georgia, on April 13, 2024, at 1:00 PM (visitation will take place from 12-1PM).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital in Mary's memory.

Mrs. Mary & Mr. Bob were friends of my parents Ed & Bette Perry for many years. I always loved Mrs. Mary she said what she meant & meant what she said. They were the most down to earth people I think ever met. I know the heart break you all are going through it never gets easier just somehow bearable. The world could use more Mrs. Mary’s!
